The Edo chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has directed doctors in the state to withdraw their services from Saturday over the abduction of two colleagues.

In a statement issued on Friday, Eustace Oseghale, chairman of the association in Edo, said the decision was taken to protest the worsening security situation and rising threats to healthcare workers.

On January 1 and 2, two medical doctors were reportedly abducted in separate incidents in the state.

One of the abducted doctors, Babatunde Abu, was reportedly kidnapped in Auchi, with his abductors demanding a N100 million ransom.

Oseghale said there is an urgent need for decisive action to secure the release of their colleagues and prevent future occurrences.

“We will continue to withhold services until our colleagues are released and adequate security measures are put in place,” he said.

The NMA chairman called for the immediate release of the doctors, improved security for residents, and sustained engagement between the Edo state government and the association to address security challenges affecting healthcare delivery.

Oseghale warned that medical services would remain suspended until the demands are met.

He urged security agencies to act swiftly and treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves.
