Aminu Tambuwal, senator representing Sokoto south, has withdrawn from the race to return to the red chamber on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform in 2027.

Michael Abimboye, an aide to the senator, confirmed the development to TheCable on Friday evening.

Tambuwal was said to have stepped down for Faruk Yabo, a former commissioner for finance, local government and community development in the north-west state.

Ibrahim Lamido, senator representing Sokoto east, also reportedly stepped down from the senatorial contest following a reconciliation agreement reached by party stakeholders.

The party is yet to announce its candidate for the Sokoto east senatorial district.

Tambuwal defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ADC in March.

He represented Tambuwal/Kebbe federal constituency in the house of representatives from 2003 to 2015 and served as speaker from 2011 to 2015.

He later served as governor of Sokoto state from 2015 to 2023.

In January, Tambuwal said Nigeria is in “peril” and that the country needs “salvation” from the political, social, and economic challenges bedevilling the nation.

The former governor said he will work with every Nigerian “who believes in finding and enthroning good democratic governance” for the country.
