Emeka Ike, the ace actor, joined protesters in Abuja on Friday for the June 12 Democracy Day demonstration against worsening insecurity in the country.

The 59-year-old actor-turned-politician called on the federal government to prioritise security while lamenting how insecurity has deprived him of his love for road travel.

Speaking at the protest ground, he reiterated that bandits must be stopped from taking over our country.

“I drive all the way from Lagos to Imo State. That’s the best journey in my life,” he said.

“I love road travel. But today, I am denied my best form of travel. It is the time of my best form of travel. We are begging the government, please don’t let this go too far.

“It might be your children tomorrow. Let’s stop bandits from taking over our country. If our country is taken over, where will all of us work? Where are we going to be? Some people can travel overseas and have homes there. Those of us who are here, we are here. We will live here and die here.”

He said the protest was not directed at the police or ordinary Nigerians but against bad governance.

“This protest is not against the police. It’s not against any Nigerian. This protest is against bad governance. We are saying that bandits must stop. Bandits must stop,” he said.

Like Ike, Falz also joined protesters in Lagos to call on the government to address the growing level of insecurity in the country.

“They’re killing too many of us. They’re kidnapping too many of us. It is happening in Kaduna, Kebbi, Zamfara, Borno, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, so many states,” he said.

Last month, Ike announced his intention to run for a seat in the house of representatives under the platform of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).

He revealed plans to contest the Abuja Municipal/Bwari federal constituency, saying his decision was driven by a desire to establish a “proper systematic structure” that can accelerate national development.
