Nentawe Yilwatda, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called for a lasting solution to the “recurring killings” in Plateau state.
Yilwatda spoke in Jos on Thursday when President Bola Tinubu visited the state to commiserate with families of victims of the recent attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North LGA.
On Sunday, about 28 people were killed, and several others were injured when suspected bandits wreaked havoc in the community.
In a statement issued on Saturday by Abimbola Tooki, his special adviser on media and communications strategy, Yilwatda commended the president’s visit and condoled with the government and people of Plateau over the “senseless killings”.
He said Tinubu’s visit demonstrated “responsive leadership, empathy, and national solidarity” at a time when residents were grieving.
The APC chairman condemned the attack, describing it as “inhuman, cowardly, reprehensible, and a direct assault on the peace, unity, and soul of Plateau state”.
He warned that the continued bloodshed should no longer be treated with routine outrage, adding that it has become a national tragedy requiring decisive and coordinated action.
‘EVIL PERPETRATORS MUST NOT BE SHIELDED’
Yilwatda said the time has come for “deliberate, coordinated, and result-oriented efforts” by all stakeholders to ensure such attacks do not happen again.
He urged community leaders to be more vigilant and proactive in reporting suspicious activities, adding that many of those behind the attacks are not outsiders.
The APC chairman added the pattern of violence suggests that the perpetrators are “not ghosts or invisible invaders, but criminal elements… living within or around the communities”.
