BNXN, the Nigerian singer, has responded to Fat Joe, the US rapper, who alleged that he was responsible for forcing him to change his name from Buju.

Appearing on a podcast alongside Jamaican dancehall icon Buju Banton, Fat Joe described BNXN as a “fake guy using the Buju name”.

He claimed that BNXN changed his stage name after being called out on The Wendy Williams Show.

BNXN did not take the accusation lightly. In a since-deleted post on X, he accused Fat Joe of harbouring “hate in his heart” and spreading misinformation about African music and its artistes. He also urged the US rapper to educate himself.

“The hate in your heart and your misinformation about African music and its artists is why your chromosomes are all fucked up. Educate yourself bozo. @fatjoe,” he wrote.

In a series of follow-up posts, the singer said even in moments of anger, he still tries to remain humane and believes respect should be mutual.

He also expressed love and gratitude to everyone who spoke up or reacted in his defence.

Even in my moments of rage , I never want to lose my sense of humanity.

Respect me and I will respect you.

“Even in my moments of rage, I never want to lose my sense of humanity. Respect me and I will respect you,” he added.

“All my genuine love and respect to everyone who gave a voice or a reaction in support. I love and appreciate each and everyone of you.”

In 2022, BNXN announced that he had changed his stage name from Buju.

Though he did not reveal the reason for his action, organic search results for the keyword “Buju” often include web activities relating to Buju Banton, the Jamaican dancehall icon.

The singer earlier explained that he adopted the name Buju after learning its Jamaican meaning and usage, and later coined an acronym from it.

“Buju is an acronym for Beauty Underneath Just Understood. It was like a poem I was writing back in university. It is also the native Jamaican word for breadfruit,” he said.

“It is a nickname given to chubby kids, so when I found out, I felt it related a lot to me. That’s why I coined that acronym, so that was what Buju meant to me at the time.”
