The African Democratic Congress (ADC) concluded its national convention in Abuja on Tuesday with delegates approving amendments to the party’s constitution and ratifying a new national working committee (NWC) led by David Mark, the former senate president.
Emeka Ihedioha, ex-governor of Imo state and chairman of the electoral sub-committee, announced the outcome of the vote.
Ihedioha said 1,576 delegates were accredited, while 11 votes were declared void.
He added that 1,471 delegates voted in favour of the constitutional amendment, representing 94 percent support.
“Distinguished delegates, by virtue of this result announced, it means that the constitution of the African Democratic Congress has today been duly amended by this convention,” he said.
Earlier, Olumide Akpata, chairman of the legal and convention processes committee, supervised the ratification of resolutions from the party’s 97th, 98th, and 99th national executive committee (NEC) meetings.
Enyinnaya Abaribe, senator representing Abia south, moved the motion for the adoption of the resolutions.
Ireti Kingibe, senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), moved the motion for the adoption of the 100th NEC meeting held on March 25, 2026.
The motion addressed the party’s manifesto and nationwide congresses. Both resolutions were adopted by a voice vote of delegates.
Chinedu Idigo, national organising secretary, outlined key resolutions adopted at the convention.
He said the resolutions include a waiver of membership requirements, suspension of zoning provisions for executive offices, and suspension of rules requiring replacement of vacant offices from the same zone as predecessors.
In his closing remarks, Mark described the convention as one of the best he had attended.
“Today marks the beginning of our journey to the villa and all of you are part of this history,” he said.
Earlier, the party expelled Nafiu Bala, former national deputy chairman, over alleged anti-party activities.
The party also expelled several members, including Leke Abejide, a member of the house of representatives, Elias Adiukeu, Kenneth Ehiator, Kingsley Temitope, Obinna Norman, Kennedy Odiong, and Stella Chukwuma.
