Britney Spears, the US singer, has entered rehab — a few weeks after her arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

The 44-year-old singer voluntarily checked into a treatment facility on Sunday, her representative confirmed to US media.

According to TMZ, the music star is in rehab for substance abuse.

“Britney has had issues with drugs — in particular, Adderall — and alcohol for years. During her many trips to Mexico, she made it a point to replenish her Adderall supply,” the news outlet reported.

“… part of the reason she’s gone to rehab now is because of her pending DUI case.”

Spears was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol (DUI) in Ventura County, California, on March 4.

Though she was released the following day, a representative for Spears had described the arrest as an “unfortunate incident” that was “completely inexcusable”.

“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” the representative said.

“Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”

The move comes just three weeks before she is scheduled to appear in a California court to face the DUI charge.

Spears has previously had encounters with law enforcement.

In 2007, the singer faced four misdemeanour charges after an alleged hit-and-run involving a parked car in Los Angeles. The charges were later dropped after she compensated the vehicle’s owner for damages.

Spears is one of the most successful pop stars in music history.
