‘Monstrous cynical game’ — Chimamanda faults Euracare for seeking order to delay inquest into son’s death

Chimamanda Adichie has faulted Euracare Hospital, Lagos, for playing a “monstrous, cynical game” by delaying the inquest into the death of the 21-month-old son.

The award-winning author also shared a copy of a letter dated April 16 that she wrote to the chairman of the hospital’s board of directors, detailing the alleged stalling tactics employed by the medical institution as her family pushed for justice.

Nkanu, one of Adichie’s twins, died on January 7, 2026, following complications during a series of preparatory medical procedures.

Adichie subsequently served the hospital a legal notice, alleging that medical negligence and professional misconduct contributed to her son’s death.

The Lagos State Judiciary then commenced an inquest into the circumstances surrounding his death on April 14.

However, on June 2, a high court in Lagos had ordered a temporary halt to the inquest following an application filed by Euracare.

Adichie said Euracare turned “uglier” after her April letter to the chairman and accused the hospital of creating “delays and distractions”.

In the letter, Chimamanda alleged that Tosin Majekodunmi, the hospital’s medical director, had initially admitted to the family that Titus Ogundare, an anaesthesiologist, had administered “too much propofol” for Nkanu, leading to the boy’s death.

The ‘Americanah’ author claimed that Majekodunmi, who had previously been humane while dealing with her family, subsequently became reticent after a while.

She also accused the anaesthesiologist of “smiling and adjusting air conditioner” and being “seemingly unconcerned” about the case during a meeting held to investigate incidents that led to Nkanu’s death.

Adichie also alleged that the medical records provided by the hospital were incomplete, unprofessional, and inaccurate, noting that they contained no records relating to the anaesthesiologist whose actions she believes contributed to her son’s death.

She added that Euracare inaccurately listed bacterial and fungal meningitis as the cause of death on her son’s death certificate.
