Lawrence Onochie, the lead pastor of The Kings Heritage Church, recently addressed his congregation on the potential strains financial dynamics can place on a marriage.
The cleric cautioned that when a wife bears the primary financial responsibility of the household for an extended period, it can negatively impact the relationship.
Onochie explained that regardless of a woman’s supportive, godly, or loving nature, carrying the financial burden often brings emotional stress that can strain the marriage.
“I do not care how supportive your wife is; if she carries the financial burden of the house, it will take a toll on your marriage. I do not care how supportive, godly or how much she loves you. Why?” he said.
“She is not built for it, and unfortunately, most women do not have the wisdom required in that phase of their relationship. They are feeling genuine stress, but they do not know how to communicate it well so that their communication can build, not destroy.”
He further highlighted that times of financial instability are particularly sensitive for men, leaving them more emotionally vulnerable. During such periods, he noted, men may be more affected by their spouse’s words and reactions.
Onochie urged men to be intentional about improving their financial capacity, emphasising that provision is a God-given responsibility.
“Because at that phase of the life of a man, he is more sensitive than ever. Anything you say will be held against you, anything you say will be remembered at that time because it is an extremely sensitive period and phase of their lives,” he added.
“So as a man, you have to be intentional about building your finances. Whether you like or not, you have to provide. God has put you in that space.”
