Tiwa Savage has questioned the industry’s entrenched ‘Big 3’ narrative, arguing that it systematically overlooks the monumental achievements of leading women in Afrobeats.
The term ‘Big 3’ is commonly used to refer to the male trio of Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy, who are celebrated as Nigeria’s most dominant global musical exports.
However, during a recent interview on BBC Radio 1Xtra, Savage challenged the “exclusionary label”.
“And I also feel like it’s unfair to have that conversation about the Top 3 and not mention someone like Tems. Are you serious?”
Tiwa’s comments underscore a persistent issue in the global rise of Afrobeats: while the genre has achieved worldwide acclaim over the past decade, its success story remains overwhelmingly male-dominated. Leading women, including Savage, Tems, and Yemi Alade, have repeatedly called out the barriers they face.
Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, started to gain popularity in 2020, courtesy of her collaboration with Wizkid on the song ‘Essence’.
In 2023, she earned her first Grammy for her contribution to ‘Wait For U’, the 2022 hit song by Future featuring Drake.
She pointed to the phenomenal success of her colleague Tems as a prime example of an artiste deserving of top-tier recognition
“Think about it, right? Certain types of artistes get paid more. So, they get the opportunity to spend more on influencers and radio play so you’re going to hear their music way more,” she said.
“And I also feel like it’s unfair to have that conversation about the Top 3 and not mention someone like Tems. Are you serious?”
