Yvonne Jegede, the Nigerian actress, has described marriage as “overrated”, saying she is no longer actively seeking it.

In a recent interview on Naija FM, Jegede, however, expressed a cautious openness to the idea, saying, “If it comes. But I am not looking for it. I have learnt not to say ‘never’”.

The 42-year-old film star said she believes the institution is given more importance than it deserves.

She pointed to the pattern of long-term relationships collapsing shortly after marriage as evidence.

“I think so. I think (marriage) is overrated. A lot of people who dated for 15 years, 17 years, they get married and break up after two to three years,” she added.

“Sometimes, you wonder why do such people do not stay apart and not get married. Because when they add the marriage tag, a lot of intolerance gets in the way. The wife will be claiming her right while the husband will do the same thing.

“Do what makes you happy. If you find the person that you like just stay with them.”

Jegede married Olakunle Abounce Fawole, a fellow actor, in 2017. But their union hit the rocks barely a year into the marriage. They both have a son together named Xavier.
