Kris Asimonye, wife of Nigerian stand-up comedian Bovi Ugboma, has revealed that she retained her maiden name due to advice from her husband.
The fashion and lifestyle entrepreneur shared the backstory in a recent Instagram post accompanied by a photo of herself.
She explained that while she didn’t fully grasp the reasoning at the time, she now understands the strategic value of the choice as she continues to build the “Kris Asimonye” brand.
“When I got married, my husband encouraged me not to change my last name. At the time I did not fully understand why,” she captioned the post.
“Now, building Kris Asimonye as a brand, I understand completely.”
Bovi and Kris tied the knot in 2009 and have three children — David, Elena and Chuchu.
Last year, the lovebirds celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary on social media, sharing family photos to mark the occasion.
In 2024, the stand-up comedian weighed in on the roles of husbands and wives in families.
Bovi acknowledged that culturally, men are expected to provide for their families, but also stressed the importance of empowering women to pursue their ambitions and become financially independent.
The comedian said if a woman’s passion drives her to provide, her contributions should be recognized and respected.
