Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna state, has asked Nigerians to support the new tax laws.

Speaking on Tuesday at a sensitisation summit, Sani said the tax laws are critical to driving sustainable development across the country.

The event, organised by Arewa Think Tank (ATT), was thened ‘The Benefits of the Renewed Hope Tax Reform Laws’.

Sani, who was represented by Jerry Adams, executive chairman of the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS), said the tax reforms will simplify Nigeria’s revenue framework.

According to the governor, the reforms will make tax compliance easier, and boost business growth, particularly for youth-led enterprises.

He explained that the reforms will streamline multiple revenue sources into clearly defined revenue lines, reduce confusion, and improve the ease of doing business.

Sani urged young people to support the reforms, stressing that their involvement is key to ensuring success and demanding accountability from government.

“Tax reform must translate into tangible outcomes such as better roads, quality education, accessible healthcare, improved security, and expanded economic opportunities,” the governor said.

He added that linking taxes to visible development outcomes will strengthen public trust and encourage voluntary compliance, urging participants to promote responsible tax citizenship.

Sani also called for collective ownership of the development process, stronger interstate collaboration, and greater youth inclusion to enhance governance and economic resilience in northern Nigeria.

Also speaking, Muhammad Yakubu, convener of Arewa Think Tank, said the tax reforms present an opportunity for northern states to drive innovation, self-reliance, and competitiveness through responsible resource utilisation.

Yakubu said the reforms will encourage creativity and deeper engagement with the federal government, unlocking opportunities for future generations.

He called on northern leaders to support the tax reforms, urged states to diversify their economies and increase internally generated revenue, and pledged support for President Bola Tinubu’s implementation of the new laws.

On January 2, Zacch Adedeji, chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), said the federal government needs at least five years to stabilise newly launched tax laws.
