A magistrate court in Kano has sentenced TikTokers Ahmad Isa and Maryam Musa for posting vulgar videos online that violated the state’s religious and moral sensitivities.

The social media users were arrested by the state’s censorship board.

Garzali Maigari Bichi, the state’s counsel, charged them with criminal conspiracy and posting illicit content.

They pleaded guilty to the charges and were sentenced to one year’s imprisonment each or a fine of N100,000.

Hadiza Muhammad Hassan, the judge, also cautioned them to be of good behaviour.

This isn’t the first time TikTokers have faced legal issues in Kano.

The Kano Hisbah Board has arrested several TikTok users in the state for violating Islamic laws.

In February 2024, Murja Kunya was apprehended and remanded in prison over allegations that she was involved in immoral acts.

G-Fresh al-Amin, another TikToker, was arrested for allegedly making inappropriate remarks in June 2024.

He was said to have recited Fatiha, the first chapter of the Quran, improperly during the last Salah celebration.
