Shallipopi, the Nigerian singer, has called out the Headies after the organisers failed to present him with the physical award for the category he won.
The 17th edition of the prestigious award ceremony took place on Sunday at the Landmark Event Centre in Lagos.
Shallipopi won the ‘Best Rap Single’ category for his hit song ‘Cast’, beating strong contenders like Odumodublvck, Magnito, Jeriq, and Ladipoe.
However, the celebration turned sour when the ‘Laho’ hitmaker walked on stage to receive his award — only to be given a handshake instead of a plaque.
Reports indicate that the organisers had run out of awards during the ceremony.
Expressing his frustration on X (formerly Twitter), the singer made it clear he was displeased with the situation and vowed not to attend future editions of the event.
“Mtchewww. The next one if una see me make I bend,” he wrote.
In a follow-up post, the singer stated that he didn’t even want the award and suggested it should be given to “real rappers” since he doesn’t consider himself one.
“I nor go even lie for una sef, I nor want that award. Give the real rappers wey dey the category, me Shallipopi I nor be rapper,” he wrote.
Shallipopi rose to fame after releasing single ‘Elon Musk’ in March 2023.
In October 2023, Shallipopi launched Plutomania Records, his record label. He also signed Tega Boi and Zerrydl.
