Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday rewarded the state’s victorious contingent to the 2025 National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, where they topped the medal table for the first time in history.
Team Lagos dazzled at the ninth edition of the Games, held last month, dethroning hosts Delta State after winning a total of 110 medals—52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze.
At a reception held at the Lagos State House, Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu announced a series of cash rewards for athletes, coaches, and officials of the Lagos State Sports Commission.
Under the package, 41 individual gold medallists will receive ₦500,000 each, while doubles gold winners will get the same amount per team. Large team event winners will share ₦1 million.
For silver medallists, 22 individual winners will pocket ₦300,000 each, with doubles teams earning the same figure and team events taking ₦700,000.
Bronze medallists were not left out, as 19 individual winners will get ₦250,000 each, doubles ₦250,000 per team, and team events ₦500,000.
The Governor also gifted the management of the Lagos State Sports Commission ₦25 million, while 61 coaches received ₦300,000 each. Even athletes who failed to win medals were appreciated with ₦100,000 apiece.
“I want to thank all of you,” Sanwo-Olu said. “The cash is just a small token of appreciation. What you require most are the right facilities and environment to excel. You have written Lagos State’s name in gold.”
He revealed that the Governor of Delta State had personally congratulated him, acknowledging Lagos as home to the best athletes in the country.
Sanwo-Olu urged the athletes to remain disciplined and focused, promising sustained investment in youth and sports development.
“We want to nurture you to compete internationally,” he said. “This government is committed to making Lagos a sports powerhouse.”
Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, hailed the Governor’s gesture as a demonstration of his faith in the potential of young people.
“This victory is living proof of your vision in action,” Fatodu said. “Your unwavering investment in sports infrastructure continues to yield results.”
