Ismaeel Ahmed, executive chairman of the presidential initiative on compressed natural gas (PiCNG), says Nigeria must take advantage of its vast gas reserves to drive a clean energy transition.
In a Facebook post he shared on Friday while reflecting on his first two months in office, Ahmed said his tenure has so far been about “listening, learning, and laying the foundation” for PiCNG’s work.
“Our mission is simple but urgent: to transition Nigeria toward cleaner, more affordable, and more sustainable energy,” he wrote.
“That begins with ensuring that CNG reaches cities and communities across this country, especially those that have long been underserved.”
The PiCNG chairman said the initiative is focused on securing reliable feedstock for mobility and industry, building compression stations and conversion centres, and partnering with financial institutions to drive investments in logistics and adoption.
He said Nigeria, with over 200 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves, must leverage its resources responsibly.
“Leveraging this resource responsibly is not only an economic imperative, it is a moral responsibility we owe to generations,” he said.
Ahmed said the initiative is committed to delivering lower energy costs for families and businesses, cleaner air in cities, and a stronger economy.
“This journey is the beginning. Together, we can make Nigeria a leader in Africa’s clean energy transition,” he added.
On September 4, Wale Edun, minister of finance, reaffirmed Nigeria’s ambition of producing 10 billion standard cubic feet (bscf) of gas per day by 2030.
