The Odua People’s Assembly (OPA), has raised alarm over what it describes as the “alarming and destructive behavior” of former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, warning that his actions pose a serious threat to the stability of Rivers State and Nigeria’s democratic process.

In a statement issued by its Chairman, Richard Olatunji Kayode, the group said it was compelled to speak out due to what it termed a growing pattern of political interference and destabilization allegedly orchestrated by Wike since the transition of power to Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The group argued that Wike’s alignment with factions opposed to the PDP’s leadership has heightened internal conflicts, weakening the party’s national structure and undermining its relevance.

Kayode said: “In the wake of the transition of power, Wike has engaged in a series of troubling maneuvers, particularly his ongoing crisis against the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara. His strategy appears to be one of sabotage, leveraging thugs and corrupt elements within the judiciary to destabilize Fubara’s administration.

“These orchestrated attacks are not mere political disagreements; they are calculated efforts to undermine governance in Rivers State. The use of violence and intimidation against political opponents, coupled with the manipulation of law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Capital Territory Police Commissioner, demonstrates a blatant disregard for the principles of democracy and the rule of law.

“The ramifications of Wike’s actions extend beyond personal ambition; they infiltrate the very fabric of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His involvement in internal conflicts within the party has sown seeds of discord, leading to a fragmentation that threatens to dilute its once formidable influence.

“By aligning himself with factions that oppose the party’s leadership, Wike is not only eroding the unity of the PDP but also fostering an environment rife with confusion and dissent among party loyalists. This internal strife is detrimental, as it undermines the effectiveness of the party and, by extension, the democratic process in Nigeria.

The group also accused Wike of attempting to exert influence over other opposition parties, including the Labour Party and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), claiming his alleged interference has triggered infighting and disillusionment among their members.

He added, “This behavior exemplifies a broader strategy of destabilization that Wike appears to be employing, one that seeks to fracture the opposition and entrench his influence over the political landscape of Rivers State.

“The implications of Wike’s actions on the rule of law cannot be overstated. By leveraging corrupt judicial elements, he has sought to weaponize the legal system against his adversaries, creating a climate of fear and uncertainty. This manipulation not only compromises the integrity of our judiciary but also sets a dangerous precedent for political conduct in Nigeria.

“It is imperative for the international community to recognize that such behavior transcends local concerns; it is a direct threat to the democratic foundations upon which our nation stands.”

The group called on the international community to “redirect its energy” toward countering what it described as Wike’s “destructive maneuvers” and to stand in solidarity with the people of Rivers State.

“We urge you to stand in solidarity with the people of Rivers State and Nigeria at large, advocating for the restoration of democratic principles and the rule of law. The time has come for the global community to take a firm stance against the forces that seek to undermine our democracy.

“We implore you to support measures that will hold Wike accountable for his actions. This includes advocating for transparency in political processes, safeguarding the independence of our judiciary, and ensuring that law enforcement agencies operate without bias or corruption. It is imperative that we collectively work towards a political environment that fosters fairness, justice, and respect for the rule of law.

“The Odua People’s Assembly stands resolute in our commitment to democracy and the rights of the people. We will not remain silent in the face of tyranny and corruption. We call upon all stakeholders, government officials, political leaders, civil society organizations, and the international community, to join us in this critical endeavor. Together, we can ensure that the voices of the people are heard and that democracy in Rivers State and Nigeria is preserved.”
