Nasty C, the South African rapper, has revealed why he does not go to church.
In a recent interview with BBC Africa, the rapper explained that fame has cost him the simple experience of going to church, adding that he now seeks out menial jobs to feel “normal”.
The rapper, whose real name is Nsikayesizwe David Junior Ngcobo, stated that attending church services has become an uncomfortable ordeal.
He described a scenario where his presence creates a distraction, pulling focus from worship and making him feel “like the devil.”
“I cannot go to church, and that sucks. Because of how I feel when I am in church. I end up feeling like the devil; everyone is turning around and looking at me instead of praying. People are doing this, people are sneaking their phones,” he said.
“They are not listening to what the pastor is saying. People are not really praying. That is weird, that is very weird. I do not think that should happen in that environment.”
The artiste also discussed his approach to combating the monotony of celebrity life: taking on regular jobs.
“Initially, I thought of it as a campaign to push this one song that I dropped called ‘Soft’ right? And the first lyric of the song is ‘working hard to just go live soft’. So I was like what do you normal people go through? What is their version of working hard to live soft?” he said.
“I know what mine is, staying up late at night, a bunch of studio time, clubs, whatever. Being able to experience that, even if it is just for a couple of hours, experiencing what a normal person does at work, I think it is just FOMO. If you know anyone who is hiring, whether it be a zookeeper, beekeeper, pilot, whatever it is, I will do it.
“After some years, this fame thing gets really boring. It gets really weird and dark, and you want to be treated like everyone else.”
