Raila Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister, has died at the age of 80 after suffering a heart attack in India.
A prominent figure in Kenyan politics, Odinga served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and ran for president five times, though he never won.
Following the disputed 2007 election, Odinga led mass protests which escalated into Kenya’s worst political violence since independence. The clashes left about 1,300 people dead and displaced hundreds of thousands from their homes.
After his most recent electoral loss in 2022, Odinga later reached a political accord with President William Ruto, joining what was described as a broad-based government that included several of his longtime allies.
He was married to Ida Odinga, a businesswoman and advocate for education. The couple had four children.
