The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari, has been granted bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja after spending 18 months in jail.

Kyari is facing charges of money laundering and cocaine trafficking, and while he has been granted bail for the former, he has been denied bail for cocaine trafficking.

Abba Kyari was granted bail on Thursday, 6th July, 2023 by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court.

Charges were brought against Kyari and two of his siblings for allegedly not declaring assets to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Justice James Omotosho granted Abba Kyari conditional bail, requiring him to pay N50 million and provide two sureties with property worth N25 million each within the Federal Capital Territory, among other conditions.

Justice Omotosho stated that the endorsement of Abba Kyari’s release warrant would be subject to developments in a connected case pending before Justice Emeka Nwite, where he is being tried with four others for an alleged drug deal, even if he meets the bail conditions.

Abba Kyari’s bail application was denied twice in the other case before Justice Nwite, while his two siblings were granted bail by Justice Omotosho.
