The Northern Concerned Citizens have applauded the Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Mohammed Matawalle, MON, for his visible commitment to reforming Nigeria’s defence institutions and boosting operational success in the fight against insurgency and banditry.

Since assuming office in August 2023, Matawalle has consistently highlighted the Armed Forces’ measurable progress while maintaining operational discretion to safeguard personnel and sensitive missions.

In a statement on Tuesday ,the group’s Secretary, Muhammad Abdullahi, described Matawalle as “a disciplined, focused and result-oriented leader whose efforts have renewed hope and confidence within the security establishment and among Nigerians.”

The group also commended the Minister’s advocacy for improved inter-agency collaboration and strategic funding of the defence sector to strengthen the nation’s capacity against emerging security threats.

Abdullahi noted that Matawalle’s emphasis on the welfare and capacity-building of military personnel — particularly through enhanced health services, international partnerships, and better healthcare funding — reflects “a human-centred approach to defence leadership.”

He added, “Bello Matawalle’s leadership stands out because he not only focuses on battlefield results but also on the wellbeing of the men and women in uniform. This is what true leadership in defence looks like.”

The group further hailed the Minister’s public recognition of frontline formations, especially his commendation of the Guards Brigade for safeguarding the seat of government, describing it as a morale booster for troops and reassurance to citizens.

Abdullahi called on government institutions, legislators, private partners and citizens to sustain their support for the Ministry of Defence in consolidating reforms, improving equipment, and strengthening logistics for national security.

“The foundation Matawalle is laying today will define the strength of Nigeria’s defence for years to come,” he added.
