Graham Stephen Potter is looking increasingly likely to become Chelsea’s new head coach with the Brighton boss verbally agreeing to the role.
After Chelsea sacked Thomas Tuchel on Wednesday, 8 September, 2022 hours after his side’s 1-0 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb, Chelsea’s third loss in seven games. They made Potter their NO1 target and swiftly received permission from Brighton to speak to him.
An agreement was reached after Potter met Todd Boehly in London on Wednesday for talks over the role. No contracts have been signed just yet, but Potter is expected to become the Blues’ new manager with the club hoping to appoint him before Saturday afternoon’s Premier League match with Fulham.
Potter has done a tremendous job at the Amex Stadium over the past year. He guided Brighton to a top-half finish last term; the Seagulls’ best-ever finish in the Premier League.
Potter did that while getting his side to play an attractive brand of football, something Todd Boehly has clearly been impressed by. He’s the man that’s been identified to take Chelsea to the next level following Tuchel’s departure Meanwhile, Former Liverpool sporting director, Michael Edwards and ex-Tottenham and Southampton recruitment guru Paul Mitchell are among those being considered by Chelsea But it looks as if though Potter is the man.
Jamie Carragher, when speaking on Sky Sports, has warned Potter about the ruthless nature of the Chelsea job. The former Liverpool vice-captain also questioned whether Potter is the right fit for the blues “It’s a very ruthless club and I’m not sure [Potter] is the right fit, maybe Chelsea are saying they want to do things differently in the future in terms of having a coach in charge rather than a manager or they do things behind the scenes differently,” Carragher said. “But if I was Graham Potter, I would find that very hard to believe that they’re going to do things differently. They’ve just got rid of a manager six games into the season.
It’s a huge step up in his managerial career and Chelsea are still one of the top clubs. They are still world champions right now, but you fear for Graham Potter that he’ll be in the same boat as every other Chelsea manager has for the last 10 years – unless he gets results instantly they’ll be getting themselves another new manager in 12 months.”
