The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has praised 81 Division officers for their rapid mobilisation to help protect democracy in the Republic of Benin.

Mr Shaibu gave the commendation on Wednesday while addressing troops of 65 Battalion at Bonny Cantonment on Victoria Island, Lagos.

An attempted coup to oust Benin’s president was foiled on Sunday.

Mr Shaibu said the troops’ prompt reaction to orders reflected the true spirit of soldiering.

“Once the instruction was issued, the General Staff mobilised quickly and ensured the mission was executed effectively.

“I say congratulations to all of you. Listen to your officers. They will lead you well. Follow instructions and uphold the soldier’s creed and our core values.

“Stay on that path and you will never go wrong,” he said.

The COAS also noted a sharp decline in illegal duties among troops.

“Do your best to stay out of trouble. Maintain the soldier’s core values and you will remain on the right path.

“You have all done well, and I want you to keep that trajectory,” he said.

Mr Shaibu assured the soldiers that their welfare would always be his priority.

“Your accommodation, allowances, your children’s education and your health care will receive top-notch attention,” he said.

He also commissioned several projects at Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja Cantonment in Ikeja to boost personnel welfare and operational readiness.

The projects include a refurbished basketball court sponsored by First Bank and a remodelled Quarter Guard at 9 Brigade Headquarters funded by Air Peace Airlines.

They also include the newly completed 9 Brigade Headquarters Complex in Ikeja.

Mr Shaibu praised the corporate partners and called for continued collaboration to improve barracks facilities and personnel welfare.
