Kevin Federline, Britney Spears’ ex-husband, has opened up about their failed marriage in his upcoming memoir ‘You Thought You Knew’.
On September 19, 2004, Spears married Kevin Federline, and the pair share two children — Sean Preston and Jayden James — before divorcing in 2007.
In excerpts from his upcoming memoir shared with the BBC, Federline accused Spears of exhibiting “erratic and unhealthy” behaviour as a mother.
He claimed she drank and used cocaine while breastfeeding their sons.
He alleged that they were often terrified of her as teenagers because they would sometimes wake up to find her standing silently in their doorway holding a knife.
“They would awaken sometimes at night to find her standing silently in the doorway, watching them sleep – ‘Oh, you’re awake?’ – with a knife in her hand,” he wrote.
“Then she’d turn around and pad off without explanation.”
Federline revealed that he decided to finally speak out about their marriage because he wanted to tell his own story.
He said he chose not to respond publicly to the media reports over the years in order to protect his loved ones and give his children “some kind of normal life”, but admits that his silence “didn’t bring peace”.
“This is about finally telling my story. My version. In my words. Because everybody else has done it for me. The media. The blogs. The exes. The strangers. The jokes. The headlines. They all had something to say about me. And I stayed quiet,” he wrote.
“But silence didn’t bring peace. It left me choking on the words I never said.”
He also denied claims that he “was just coasting off her money” and insisted he was “out there hustling, grinding, investing, working to build a solid foundation for myself and my kids”.
However, Spears’ spokesperson, in a statement, accused Federline of trying to profit from her name through his book.
The statement argued that the release comes shortly after his child support payments ended.
The spokesperson added that Spears is focused solely on her sons and their well-being amid the renewed media attention.
“With news from Kevin’s book breaking, once again he and others are profiting off her and sadly it comes after child support has ended with Kevin,” the statement reads.
“All she cares about are her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and their well-being during this sensationalism. She detailed her journey in her memoir.”
