The Global President of Nigerians in Diaspora for Good Governance Organization, Dr Raymond Edoh, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rise to what he described as a defining moment in Nigeria’s history by safeguarding democracy and upholding the rule of law.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Edoh said the President, as “father of the nation”, must stand for truth and protect the democratic principles that brought him into office.
He warned against what he termed politically motivated decisions and undue influence of the government on citizens’ rights and freedoms.
“The right thing must be done. Nigeria must be known for respect for the rule of law, not politically driven actions,” he said.
Edoh stressed that under his leadership, the organisation would resist any erosion of democracy.
“We will not allow the erosion of democracy in Nigeria — not on my watch,” he declared.
He described the current moment as a “defining test of statesmanship”, urging Tinubu to demonstrate courage by supporting justice, promoting unity, and strengthening democratic institutions.
“He must stand firmly for fairness, accountability, and the rule of law. If these steps are taken, Nigeria will be set on a path towards a stronger future,” Edoh added.
The diaspora leader also called on the international community, including the United States Department of State, United Nations, and European Union, to support Nigeria in defending democratic values.
He further urged global institutions such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch to closely monitor developments in the country.
Edoh appealed to Nigeria’s three arms of government — the legislature, executive, and judiciary — to uphold their constitutional responsibilities.
“The legislature must enact laws that protect democratic integrity. The executive must enforce them without bias, while the judiciary must interpret them with fairness and independence,” he said.
He emphasised that Nigeria’s future must not be shaped by intimidation or concentration of power.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us. We stand not as partisans, but as patriots committed to preserving democratic ideals,” Edoh stated.
“Let history record that at this moment, we chose courage over silence, unity over division, and democracy over tyranny.”
