Hon. Elvert Ayamben, the speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, has called for the arrest of the organisers of an LGBT event that took place in a Calabar hotel. He has urged security agencies in the state to take action against those responsible.

Based on reports, the LGBT event titled ‘Pride Ballroom 2023- Most Beautiful Drag 2023’ was held on the 30th of June 2023.

Hon. Ayamben has shown serious concern about the involvement of teenagers at the event. According to a witness, majority of the guests at the event were teenage boys wearing female clothing, make up and handbags.

In an official statement, Speaker Matthew Okache issued a warning to anyone or organisation involved in such activities to stop or face the risk of prosecution by authorities.

“It has come to the notice of the Hon. Speaker of the Cross River State House Of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, that on the 30th of June 2023, a certain hotel in Ekorinim in Calabar Municipality, hosted a gay party in their premises, where under age teenagers were also in attendance,” the statement read.
Matthew Okache, made it clear that Hon. Elvert Ayamben had already contacted security agencies and other relevant government ministries and departments to ensure that the parties involved in the planning of the LGBT event are brought to book, in order to serve as an example to others.
