Ahmad Aliyu, the governor of Sokoto state, has been spotted breaking his Ramadan fast with an almajiri kid.
Almajiranci refers to a system of Islamic education practiced in northern Nigeria. The male gender seeking Islamic knowledge is called almajiri.
In a now-viral video shared on his Instagram page, the governor sat alongside some Islamic students on a mat while sharing a spoon of rice with one of them.
The clip also showed Aliyu sharing a sachet of water with the boy to flush down the food.
The footage is a snippet from the ongoing state government’s Ramadan feeding promgramme in conjunction with the Sokoto ministry of religious affairs.
During the programme, the state government distributed food items and fruits to beneficiaries.
The government also shared cash gifts and prayer mats for the Muslims in the state.
“Sokoto State Ramadan Feeding Program 2024. Distribution of assorted grains, prayer mats, sugar, date, cash, and other cooking items to feeding centers,” the governor wrote on X.

The Ramadan season is regarded as a month of charity and communal sharing, especially for the needy.
During this time, Muslims also self-reflect and increase their acts of worship and devotion.
It is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and is said to be one of the pillars of Islam. The Ramadan period usually lasts between 29 to 30 days based on the sighting of the crescent moon.
