Ayra Starr, the Afrobeats superstar, has credited music with rescuing her from potential unemployment.
In a chat with EE72, the 24-year-old singer admitted that she would have remained dependent on her family had she not found success in the industry.
Starr also shared personal insights into her life, career trajectory, and the realities of her meteoric rise.
“If I were not doing music, I would literally be unemployed. I do not even think I would be a content creator. That would be a lot of work,” she said.
“I would just be vibing in my mother’s house, eating my mother’s food.”
The ‘Sability’ hitmaker also reflected on a pivotal moment early in her journey, discovering that Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy had been following her work prior to her signing.
“I was so excited when I found out they were listening to my music. You know who it is,” she said.
“I really wish people knew less about me. Once the camera comes on, I cannot stop talking. And I feel like I over share.”
Born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, Ayra Starr became a viral sensation after releasing her hit track ‘Bloody Samaritan’ in 2021.
Under Mavin Records, the songstress has gained popularity in the industry. She also earned a plethora of awards and nominations for her craft.
Don Jazzy described signing Starr as a strategic move. The record label head honcho said he was struck by her originality and immediately tried to contact her.
“She didn’t answer me first,” he had explained.
He said after seeing a post that included her brother, he sent a message to him as well, which ultimately led to her signing with Mavin Records in 2020.
