The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia has asked Alex Otti, the state’s governor, to declare his political allegiance publicly ahead of the 2027 elections.
Otti is a member of the Labour Party (LP).
In a statement issued on Friday, Uche Aguoru, publicity secretary of the APC in Abia, accused Otti of attempting to retain the support of Peter Obi’s political base while maintaining cordial ties with the Bola Tinubu administration.
Aguoru noted that Chukwuma Soludo, governor of Anambra, has publicly declared support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.
He said whether or not people agree with Soludo’s position, the Anambra governor has demonstrated political consistency by openly stating where he stands.
“Whether one agrees with Soludo or not, there is something to be said about him for his political courage, honesty and consistency,” the statement reads.
“He has made his position known and has never been known to speak from both sides of his mouth even during his campaign period.”
The APC spokesman added that the same cannot be said of Otti.
According to Aguoru, Otti is trying to retain support from the Obidient Movement and other opposition groups, while creating the impression that he is supportive of the APC-led federal government.
“While everyone is aware of Governor Otti’s longstanding political alliance with Mr. Peter Obi and the Obidient Movement, it is becoming increasingly evident that he seeks to retain the support of the Obidient Movement and other anti-Tinubu forces to secure his re-election,” he said.
“At the same time, he secretly attempts to create the impression that he is supportive of the APC-led Federal Government while deliberately avoiding any open acknowledgment of President Tinubu’s leadership or public support for his re-election.”
Aguoru also referenced the visit of the Renewed Hope National Media Tour to Abia.
He alleged that Otti deliberately avoided receiving the delegation in order not to acknowledge federal government projects in the state.
“Rather than personally receive the team, he delegated aides to handle the visit, carefully distancing himself from any situation that might require him to publicly acknowledge President Tinubu’s unprecedented infrastructural interventions in Abia State,” the statement added.
Aguoru alleged that Otti’s aides and political associates frequently criticise Tinubu and the APC.
“Governor Otti should be bold enough to publicly declare that President Tinubu is doing well. He should publicly declare support for his re-election,” he said.
“He should have the courage to state his support openly, and publicly tell his supporters to support Tinubu’s re-election if indeed he believes in the Tinubu re-election project.”
The APC spokesman said the party remains focused on securing victory for Tinubu in Abia during the 2027 elections.
According to him, the party has the structure, membership strength, and grassroots support required to achieve that objective.
Aguoru also accused Otti of failing to credit the federal government for infrastructure projects and other interventions in the state.
He alleged that some federal projects are being presented as achievements of the state government.
“Enough of the political wayo. Enough of the double standards. Enough of the deception. The people of Abia deserve to know exactly where their governor stands and who he is supporting,” he said.
“Governor Otti should stop the deceitful politics and clearly declare where his loyalty lies.”
The spokesperson added that the party is determined to win the governorship, senatorial, house of representatives, and state assembly elections in Abia.
