Tiwa Savage, the songstress, has revealed that her preference for a girl child affected her bond with her son, Jamal.
Savage, who was married to talent manager Tunji ‘TeeBillz’ Balogun from 2013 to 2018, welcomed Jamal in 2015.
Speaking on the recent episode of the FlowWithKorty podcast, the 45-year-old music star disclosed that learning her baby’s gender during pregnancy led to profound disappointment.
The singer-turned-actress said the physical and professional challenges of postpartum life compounded the initial sadness.
She admitted that she struggled to bond with Jamal, whom she subconsciously viewed as the cause of a difficult transformation.
Savage linked part of her emotional distance to the drastic changes in her body, which she felt impacted her career.
“Honestly, I did not bond with him for the first year or two. I always wanted a girl. They told me it was a boy and I started crying. So when he came, he was always crying. And my body did not snap back. I looked horrible. I was supposed to do a campaign with Pepsi at the time. They had to not use me and get somebody else,” she said.
The singer also spoke about the evolution of their relationship. She emphasised that the initial struggle has given way to an unbreakable bond.
“But now, that is my best friend. Me and him are like best friends. It is not even for the camera or social media,” she added.
Savage has solidified her status as one of the continent’s most influential and celebrated artistes since she rose to stardom.
