The Kano Hisbah Board has called off the proposed wedding between popular TikTokers Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda.

A magistrate court had earlier directed the board to oversee the marriage process within 60 days.

The court had warned that failure to comply would amount to a contempt.

The court’s order followed the arrest of both TikTokers by the Kano State Censorship Board after videos of them, described as “immoral and demeaning”, went viral on social media.

The board said the clips, which showed a shirtless Wushirya displaying affection toward Yar Guda, breached state laws prohibiting obscene and sexually suggestive content.

Punch reports that Abba Sufi, Hisbah’s director-general, said the board found that Wushirya only agreed to marry Yar Guda as a way to escape legal charges and not out of genuine affection.

He added that after uncovering this, the board cancelled the planned wedding and referred the case back to the judge for further action.

“Mai Wushirya told us that he lied to the court that he and Yar Guda were in love to evade prosecution,” he said.

“With this development, we have cancelled the wedding and have resolved to refer the matter to the judge who gave the order for appropriate action.”

The court’s earlier directive compelling the TikTokers to marry sparked widespread criticism, with many describing it as a violation of personal freedom.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) condemned the order, calling it “unconstitutional” and stressing that marriage is a voluntary union that cannot be enforced by the state.
