Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI) says democracy across Africa is under mounting strain and must be strengthened with urgent reforms.

The group will convene a side event at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on 18 September, titled “Strengthening Democratic Foundations in Africa.”

According to the organization, the gathering is expected to bring together reformers, researchers, and practitioners to explore practical steps and share commitments on bolstering democratic resilience across the continent.

Speaking in a statement to commemorate world International Day on Monday,Bukola Idowu, KDI’s Executive Director, said democracy is not simply a calendar event but a daily practice where leaders are held accountable, and citizens are empowered.

He warned that economic hardship, insecurity, disinformation, and political polarisation are eroding trust in democratic systems.

Idowu also noted that women, young people, persons with disabilities, and other marginalised communities continue to face barriers to meaningful participation in governance.

Despite these challenges, KDI insists Africa’s civic energy remains a vital strength. Nigerians, it said, continue to fact-check, litigate, volunteer, and innovate in defence of democratic values.

The organisation has pledged to keep pushing reforms on election integrity, transparency in political financing, and civic education, stressing that democracy must deliver real improvements in people’s lives rather than serve a privileged few.
