Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, and former President Goodluck Jonathan met to discuss the “state of the nation”.

In a post on X, Obi said he and the former president discussed the state of the nation during their meeting, which was held in Abuja, the nation’s capital, on Thursday.

“Today in Abuja, I met with my very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan,” Obi wrote.

“We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation.”

The meeting comes amid growing speculation that Jonathan may run for president in 2027.

Several chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi, had said the party is considering Jonathan or Obi to possibly lead the party to the 2027 elections.

Abba Moro, senator representing Benue south, had also said some persons have been engaging with Jonathan and Obi over a potential return to the PDP.

Moro said Obi could clinch the party’s presidential ticket in 2027 if he decides to return.

While Obi, a chieftain of the Labour Party (LP) and a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, has declared his intention to run for president in 2027, Jonathan has remained silent.

Last week, Janathan said he was betrayed by his allies in 2015 when he was seeking re-election.

“Politics in the Nigerian standard is about betrayals. I witnessed a lot of betrayal during the 2015 election,” he said.

Jonathan said that in politics, it is difficult to find anyone who maintains the same position in the morning, afternoon, and evening.
